Yes, you knew that the library was full of books, free to use with a library card, but now there’s more. Our former book sale table, full of items that have been withdrawn from the library’s collection, is now a FREE table. Come into the library at the Castlegar campus to have a look through the former library books to see if there’s one (or two, or more) that you might want to take home with you.

Easter is coming soon! The library will be closed Good Friday and Easter Monday, but open over the weekend, 12-4 both Saturday and Sunday, April 11th and 12th.

Darwin 200

This week was the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. In celebration of one of the world’s most creative and influential thinkers, Selkirk College has a few displays throughout the library.

Oysters, Authors and Ale … Making Literacy Everyone’s Pearl

Introducing a literacy event presented by The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and The Nelson Municipal Library in association with Selkirk College Library in celebration of Freedom to Read Week.

Hosted by CBC’s Mark Forsythe, enjoy an evening of local authors along with Oysters from Brent the Oyster Man and ale from the Nelson Brewing Company.

Hear readings from:

Luanne Armstrong, Vivien Bowers, Anne DeGrace, Rita Moir, Mark Nykanen, Eileen Delahanty Pearkes, and Cyndi Sand-Eveland

This event will take place Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, from 7 to 10pm at the Nelson Rod and Gun Club.

Tickets are $30 per person and available at Otter Books or the Nelson Municipal Library.

Streaming Videos available

Curious about the history of your favourite blue cheese? Want to learn about how the English language weathered Viking and Norman invasions to become what it is today? These and more are now available through the library catalogue in the form of streaming videos.

The B.C. Media centre (AEMAC) has provided colleges with a new format of video programs – streaming video available online. Selkirk College Library now has 16 titles – 8 in the Adventure of English series, and 8 cook training videos. The Library has added the videos to our catalogue, with links to the streaming website, and they can be viewed online individually or presented in class. (The low resolution version is recommended for individual viewing, as the high resolution video uses much more band width.)

You can find the videos on the Library website by clicking on SEARCH THE LIBRARY CATALOGUE and typing in “streaming video”. Display the DETAILS for any title on the list. The link to the electronic access is in the CATALOG RECORD tab.

A library login is required in order to view the videos. If you don’t already have a library card, you can get one at the library or fill out a library card application form and send it to the Castlegar campus library:

Canada Reads 2009

Canada Reads is happening again on CBC Radio 1, and the Selkirk College library has a copy of each of the selections in our collection. The books will be defended on the air from March 2 to 6, so make sure to get into the library in time to read them all for yourself.

World Book Advanced – Database Trial

Database Trial – World Book Advanced

The Selkirk College library has been provided with a free trial to World Book Online until the end of December. To access from on campus – contact the library for a username and password.

To access this resource from off-campus, students and faculty can login with library card number and PIN at: http://ezproxy.library.selkirk.ca:2048/login and go to the World Book link.

This database integrates primary and secondary sources in a single search. Resources include encyclopedic and multimedia content, as well as a wealth of research tools that allow students to customize and save their content.

The library welcomes comments on the usefulness of this resource for the college.
